Stop Abortion Now! Wrong Questions Lead to Wrongs Answers |

First of all, just what is abortion. The words used on both sides of the issue in the "abortion" debate have minimized what is actually occurring. Semantics Currently, the debate pits the pro-lifers against the pro-choicers, but these terms are meaningless. Even though I am opposed to abortion, I could say that I'm pro-choice - and my choice is life. Well, if those words don't work, why not go back to calling it abortion? According to the dictionary, aborting something means to stop or terminate it. Yet, many things can be aborted. When NASA scrubs a launch during the countdown, it aborts the take-off. Those of us who remember the old days of using DOS on a personal computer will remember that an invalid command was met with the response, "Abort, Retry, Fail..." So if the word abortion doesn't clarify things, perhaps the clarification comes in defining "it." What is "it" that is being aborted or chosen? It is a human life. It is a human life in its earliest stage of development. As one bumper sticker has said, "If it ain't a baby, then you ain't pregnant." With that said, it is time to call the debate what it is and confronting people with the question, "Are you in favor of killing babies or not?" When does Human Life Begin? Of course, those who are in favor of killing babies will argue that it really isn't a baby until X number of weeks. When my wife and I viewed a sonogram image of our baby at 9 weeks gestation, it was easy to see a beating heart and arms and legs. Physicians know that human life begins as a one-celled animal, a zygote. This "animal" some will argue is not really a human yet at this stage because it has similarities to other animals. Although that "animal" has similarities both in utero and after birth, e.g. cells, kidneys, tailbones, etc., a human embryo will always develop to be a human. A woman will never give birth to a fish, and a fish will never give birth to a baby girl. The one-celled amoeba only reproduces amoebas and humans only reproduce humans. DNA determines what type of life form will grow - pregnant women have developing humans growing within them. There is not some mini-evolutionary process going on. If one still believes that it really isn't a baby until X number of weeks, then what is X? Is it OK to kill a baby at 8 weeks, but not 9? 20 weeks but not 21? 30 weeks but not 31? Where is the line? There is no line. Once conception occurs, what has been created is alive and human; and to "abort" it is to kill "it" - a living human being. "It's My Body!" Outside of rape, the only "choice" a woman has is her behavior that results in getting pregnant or not. Once pregnant however, it is no longer just her body that she is responsible for. One may not like their situation, but killing a baby to make one's life easier is selfish; to argue that it's best for the baby is presumptuous. Conclusion So the question then is not about choice, or when human life begins, or whose life is it, but rather, when does one want to afford human life respect and protection? At one cell? Twenty-three weeks? Nine months? Eighteen years, and maybe only then if there are no physical or mental impairments? It is all human and we should protect the entire continuum. Please, choose adoption, not abortion, and save a human life. |
