In
the early 1980's I was watching the fourth of July celebration
in New York City. I was struck by how our celebration of independence
looked like war. Freedom has a high price. The song was written
shortly after that with a rough recording made in 1989. The
recording presented here was produced in 2000.

In
November of 1980, a 7.2 Magnitude earthquake struck Southern
Italy. I found myself very distressed over this tragic event
as some of my own relatives were affected by it. This piece
came out of those feelings, and also won the Brooklyn College
1980-81 Contemporary Chamber Music Composition Competition.
Years later I visited the stricken area and shared this composition
with my family there.

At
the time of this composition, I was studying a lot of Stravinsky
so any resemblance is purely intentional.
